A blanket of snow enveloped the night with serenity. I poked my head out our front door and inhaled the crisp scent of pine nestled under the thick blanket of white. I love the quiet of this silent night. Cars are tucked in and plows cease their striving. The world slows to a stop, and our winter wonderland lies undisturbed.
Snow is used as a description for many things in the Bible. Miriam (Numbers 12:10) and Gehazi (2 Kings 5:27) experienced leprosy when they sinned, both turning white as snow.
Our sins are noted as scarlet and washed as white as snow in Psalms 51:7 and Isaiah 1:18.
The brightness of God’s appearance is described as dazzling white in Daniel 7:9, Mark 9:3, and Revelation 1:14.
Whether you live in a frozen tundra or barren desert, all know that God commands the seasons and refreshes the earth. Job 24:19, 37:6, 38:22, Psalm 148:8, Proverbs 25:13, 26:1, and Isaiah 55:10-11.
This winter let snow remind you of a powerful metaphor for your work and worship. God has created all things new.
Exercise:
Consider this SNOW acrostic:
S. Seek God in every season. Whether you’re in a highly productive time or a medically challenging one, the Lord’s presence is available. Isaiah 46:4 is my favorite verse to tuck in a birthday card.
N. Note the use of imagery in Scripture and let it shape your writing. Use Creative Nonfiction techniques to bring color to your piece and let the five senses bring your reader along for the journey. Doesn’t it feel delectable to read Psalm 34:8?
O. Open your eyes to God’s Word in the world and let it shape your perspective. Ask Him to help you see things you’ve overlooked and add another dimension. 2 Kings 6:15-17 tells of one such time for Elisha and his servant.
W. Wonder at the ways God uses your words when you surrender to Him. A heart surrendered to God will become a work of art in His hands. Embrace the touch of the Master’s hand in Exodus 35:35.
Let the change of seasons bring clarity to your focus!
Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 2 Samuel 23:20 NIV
Valiant writer, what lion will you tackle today?
