A Lighter Look at the Writer's Life

Small Beginnings

lighter look at a writer's life

I recently had the opportunity to chat with a fellow writer. I noticed she was mostly wanting to talk about my writing, but, when I turned the tables and asked about her writing, her response was “I have nothing,” As she continued, she mentioned a couple of things she has actually written.

She proceeded to fidget in her seat as she told me it was a while back when she wrote those couple of things, giving off the “they really don’t count” vibe, I assured her that her writings did count and that we all have to start somewhere.

I told her there was a verse in the Bible that says to not despise the day of small beginnings. She took a minute to write it down, and I pulled my phone out and found the verse. This scripture passage was God assuring the people that Zerubbabel had begun the temple and that he would be the one to finish it.

“Does anyone dare despise this day of small beginnings? They’ll change their tune when they see Zerubbabel put the last stone in place!”

(Zechariah 4:10 Message bible)

Zerubbabel wasn’t the only one to experience small beginnings in the Bible. When Noah nailed those first two boards together, they didn’t look much like an ark. I’m sure, even at the end of the first day, that boat wouldn’t float.

Dorcas had to take those first uneven stitches before she began her ministry of sewing for the poor. Her sewing talent and generosity outlived her and was what she was remembered for after her passing.

Shepherd boy David was probably shaky that first solo night on the hillside with the sheep. But look at him! He went on to kill a lion, a bear, and even a giant. He also wrote about it all.

We all have to start somewhere. So, if your small beginnings are because you haven’t written much or because you haven’t been published or because you are starting a new project, don’t despise where you are now. Start nailing those next two boards together and look for God to send the rain.
